When the summer wedding season approaches, it’s hard not to get excited about buying a new dress, shirt or suit for every occasion, but what do we wear to a winter wedding? Can men get away with flashing Christmas jumpers and novelty socks? And how do women pull off the dress and tights look elegantly?

Below, we explore some of the best winter wedding outfits for all as well as covering some of the fashion ‘faux-pas’ of dressing for a cold, winter’s event.

Women’s Winter Fashion

For women, dressing up stylishly in the winter can be quite a challenge. You can happily wear a sparkly mini dress and heels with a warm teddy coat thrown over the top at your Christmas work party because you know that you’ll only need to walk between the taxi and venue. However, when it comes to a day-long event like a wedding during the winter months, you may want to consider comfort and warmth as well as style as there could be a lot of walking or standing around involved.

Dresses

Winter dresses are generally worn with tights and boots, but how do you add a bit of sophisticated glam and take your outfit from ordinary to wedding-worthy? Well, why not consider lurex tights or metallic shoes/boots to add a touch of festive cheer to your attire? Failing that, you could always wear flesh-coloured tights and accessorize bare legs with a longer, heavier dress than you would wear in summer or opt for an ankle-length cardigan with a sparkly sheen that’ll take away the chill.

Jumpsuits

Jumpsuits have grown in popularity in recent years and have become a staple piece in most women’s wardrobe. By sporting a fashionable all-in-one to a Christmas wedding, you can look every bit the stylish woman andkeep your legs covered up! Go for an elegant muted jumpsuit and team with oversized, statement jewellery or go bold with interesting patterns or a pop of colour and let the outfit speak for itself!

Jackets and throws

Jackets are normally an afterthought with most outfit choices but take this opportunity to incorporate your outerwear with your chosen attire. Think smart blazers, sequin bomber jackets, faux fur coats, soft pashminas and wool capes… rather than seeing them as a ‘cover up’, consider them an embellishment and a piece of clothing that will jazz up your outfit for this magical holiday season.

Men’s Christmas Collections

Shirts and ties

Let’s face it, men’s smart/casual wear can be a bit of a bore – how many different coloured shirts can a guy own? Luckily for the modern, suave gent, there are so many new styles emerging that can help make you stand out. Take skinny ties, small collar dress shirts, slim fit polos, and collar bars and tips, for example – simply put, you can make any plain shirt fit in with your individual style! Floral prints are also making a comeback for twenty-first century men, but what colour suit do you wear with an overly printed fabric? Let’s find out…

Suits

If you are going to be attending a wedding during the festive period, then you will want to arrive in style… and stay warm while you’re at it! That said, with dozens to hundreds of guests all congregating in one room, the venue will probably heat up more than you think. That is why it is crucial to plan for all eventualities. Wearing a long sleeve shirt with sleeves that you can roll up means that you can dress in a light to heavyweight jacket that can be slung over your shoulder. Remember that you don’t have to go for a black, navy or grey two-piece suit (although it is best to keep it simple if you plan on wearing a flashy shirt!), with a Christmas wedding you can go all out and wear a burgundy, tweed or even damask suit to grab the attention of fellow guests.

Footwear

Finally, even though the ‘no socks and loafers’ look works with a pair of light chinos in the warmer months, you don’t want to risk getting frostbite by going for this on-trend appearance at a December or January wedding. We’re not saying, however, that you must dig out your woolly socks, there are many shoe or boot options that work well with a pair of slim leg trousers and that will keep your feet nice and toasty during the long day of celebrations. If you aren’t keen on a simple pair of leather shoes, why not consider a pair of pointed boots or a pair of suede brogues?

Of course, we’re not here to tell you what you can and can’t wear, the choice is yours! On the other hand, we do hope that we have given you food for thought and perhaps given you some ideas to take away whilst you plan for this exciting winter wedding season.
